Washington Post 40's Decade Book - Gift Details
The Washington Post newspaper book uses reprinted coverage from DC’s flagship publication to create a fantastic reportage history of the key events throughout the 1940s.
As you’d expect, the first half of the 1940s was dominated by World War II. The book’s coverage of the European theater is extensive as, of course, is the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941. Thereafter, many of the conflicts key events feature in detail, along with FDR’s historic third term that began in 1941 and his untimely death in April 1945.
Even after 1945, the shadow of the conflict continued to shape the global scene. But that’s not to say there weren’t plenty of other newsworthy events. The massive blast at a chemical plant in Texas City in 1947 that killed 1,200 and injured a further 3,500 features in depth, as does the tragic news of Ghandi’s assassination in 1948.
The book also includes coverage of the US’s recognition of Israel in 1948, along with Truman’s historic and ambitious Fair Deal of 1949, which education and health reforms helped mark a new stage in the liberalism we now associate with the US.
