Coverage begins in 1960 when Oakland was awarded an NFL franchise. AFL West Division titles in 1967, ’68 and ’69 are all included, along with ‘67’s AFL Championship and the team’s unsuccessful Super Bowl appearance in which they lost to the Green Bay Packers that same year. Thereafter, the book features all of the Raiders’ finest moments, the result of which is a fantastic reportage history.
Along with the team’s six AFC West Division titles in just seven years between 1970 and 1976, the Raiders three Super Bowl victories obviously feature. The first, at Super Bowl XI, following a hugely successful 1976 season, saw the Raiders run out 32-14 victors over the Minnesota Vikings, with wide receiver Fred Biletnikoff winning the MVP award.
Four years later, at Super Bowl XV, the Raiders dispatched of the Philadelphia Eagles 27-10. This time the MVP award went to quarterback Jim Plunkett. And in 1983, the franchise won their third and final Super Bowl, this time comfortably beating off the challenge from the Washington Redskins 38-9. Running back Marcus Allen scooped the MVP award on this occasion. Every detail is included in the book.
Along with other standout results, including those over the Raiders’ big rivals – the Broncos, Chargers and 49ers – there are reports on the team’s relocation from Los Angeles back to Oakland in 1995. There’s also coverage of the 2002 defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
As for the book itself, it measures in at an impressive 12.5 x 15 inches, bound in a burnt sienna cover. Made with an antique-style finish, the cover beautifully contrasts the book’s originally reported black and white content, for the ultimate Oakland Raiders memorabilia.
