LA Times 60's Decade Book
- Gift Details
The Los Angeles Times newspaper book uses reprinted coverage from this dominant American publication to create a fantastic reportage history of the key events throughout the 1960s.
The year of 1960 creates a dramatic opening to this fascinating decade book. JFK was elected, taking over at a critical time, with tensions in Cuba at an all time high, Fidel Castro nationalized most US owned assets on the island and the Cold War continued to rage.
The civil rights movement is seen to make incredible progress during the 1960s, Kennedy who championed the movement, is the first in a long line of important political figures to be assassinated, in November 1963 at the hands of Lee Harvey Oswald in Texas. Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King, was gunned down in 1968, and JFK's younger brother, Senator Bobby Kennedy, was killed just a few months later. It seemed to be a decade for untimely deaths, with headlines also covering the death of Clark Gable in 1960, Marilyn Monroe in 1962 and boxer Davey Moore in 1963. The deaths of political icons Winston Churchill and Che Guevara are also covered.
All the while, the terrible events unfolding in Vietnam and the constant calls for an end to the conflict are covered at length. In a more positive turn of events, the 'space race' between the US and the Soviet Union grips the world as Russia put the first man in space in 1961 and America's Neil Armstrong is the first man to walk on the moon in 1969. Another ground breaking moment in American history also took place, which is extensively covered, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which saw an end to years of law enforced segregation in schools, the workplace and public facilities.
