Washington Post 80's Decade Book - Gift Details
The Washington Post newspaper book uses reprinted coverage from DC’s flagship publication to create a fantastic reportage history of the key events throughout the 1980s.
The 1980s was an intriguing time in American history when, after the liberal and insular approach of Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan sought to re-establish American dominance on the international scene. It didn’t start well, though, with an attempt on Reagan’s life by John Hinckley in March 1981. Both Reagan’s first election victory and the assassination attempt feature in detail in this book.
On a military level, the book covers the New Cold War getting into full swing, with ‘hot’ US incursions into Lebanon in 1982 and Grenada one year later. It also looks at Reagan’s huge re-election victory in 1984, before featuring reports on Mikhail Gorbachev becoming the Soviet leader in 1985. This was a watershed moment between the two nations, culminating in the historic nuclear missile treaty between them in December 1987.
Another newsworthy moment included in the book is Britain’s royal wedding in 1981 that saw Diana marry Charles at St Paul’s Cathedral. Then there are the two Redskins Super Bowl victories in 1983 and 1988, as well as the tragic event in January 1986 when the viewing public watched as the space shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after lift-off, killing all astronauts onboard.
