Pittsburgh Pirates Book - Gift Details
Relive the Pirates’ most memorable moments with this Washington Post newspaper book, featuring reprints of reports written at the time.
Coverage begins in September 1909 with the Pirates clinching their fourth National League Pennant, and then the World Series against the Detroit Tigers. In the team’s first final, the Series went to seven games with the Pirates eventually sealing it 4-3, thanks in no small part to the exploits of Honus Wagner.
Also included in the coverage is the second World Series title in 1925, which the Pirates secured with victory in seven games over the defending champions, the Washington Senators. In winning, the Pirates became the first team in a best-of-seven series to come from 3-1 down.
The next period to be covered in serious detail is the 1960 season, in which the Pirates wrapped up their third World Series with victory over the New York Yankees. Yet again, the title was taken to the seventh game, where the Pirates’ Bill Mazeroski hit a ninth-innings home run to seal a 10-9 win.
Thereafter, the two World Series wins in 1971 and 1979 also feature, in what was a very successful period for the team. More recently, divisional titles in the early 1990s also get their share of the limelight, while the new millennium includes coverage of the team’s victories over the Cardinals in 2002 and 2003.
As for the book itself, it measures in at an impressive 12.5 x 15”, with the choice of two striking editions – both gold-embossed for free. The first is our original burnt sienna cover, made with an antique-style coat; beautifully contrasting the book’s originally reported black and white content.
