LA Times 80's Decade Book - Gift Details
The Los Angeles Times newspaper book uses reprinted coverage from this dominant American publication to create a fantastic reportage history of the key events throughout the 1980s.
For America, the 1980s were a time of change and intrigue. Ronald Reagan was elected in 1980 and again in 1984, his new and radical approach to politics ensured that he was frequently in the headlines, apart from his political work he also hit the headlines when John Hinckley attempted to assassinate him in 1981, just 69 days into his presidency. Reagan was in a critical condition but managed to survive the ordeal. This seems to be a running theme in the beginning of the book, with the assassination of John Lennon and the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II also being covered within the first 2 years of the decade.
On a military level, the book covers the ongoing Cold War, reports cover the US arming rebel Afghan forces against the Soviet troops, and the Soviet Allies Olympic boycott in 1984. By 1985 headlines are turning to the new Soviet president Gorbachev and the peace efforts from both nations, which eventually lead to the historic nuclear missile treaty between them in December 1987. Other military reports include the invasion of Grenada in 1983 and Panama in 1989.
Further news reports included in the book cover the tragic event in January 1986 when the viewing public watched as the space shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after lift-off, killing all astronauts onboard. The Philippines features heavily in the second half of the book, as the country is hounded by communist insurgency, debt, coup attempts and military conflicts with Islamic separatists. The falling of the Berlin wall is also covered.
